About ZagrebDox Pro

Today films are made, produced, financed, distributed and watched much differently than just a few years ago. Filmmaking circumstances have changed and the only right thing to do is to respond to these changes with new initiatives. ZagrebDox’s response to the changed circumstances on the documentary scene is to focus on specific content and/or style of future, up-and-coming documentary projects. The idea is to analyse, demystify, clarify and explain how and why, and at what cost is best to make a certain type of films. The field of special interest will be defined in advance each year, and in 2023 the focus will be on documentary films about war.

War events in Ukraine and the latest threats to global peace inspired us this year to turn to the topic documentary filmmakers have dealt with since the dawn of filmmaking. In the most different possible ways: from being present on the front lines, to creating intimate, poetic essays; from the harsh realism of observational to the metaphorical strength of animated documentaries. Documentary practice worldwide is teeming with powerful examples of such films. Unfortunately, the Croatian society and filmmakers are well familiar with this, since it is war that some of the finest among them focused on. Moreover: they were made during the war.

In its 2023 edition, ZagrebDox Pro, under the title Dox of War, calls all documentarians dealing (or planning to deal) with the topic of war in its broadest sense, to apply for participation in a very focused and elaborate industry event. Dox of War offers:

-          Project/film analysis
-          Recommendations and suggestions for further work
-          One-year online mentorship
-          Case studies
-          Group and individual discussions
-          Masterclasses
-          Special film screenings
-          Panel discussions

Speakers, experts and guests at Dox of War events organised by ZagrebDox Pro will be some of the most significant European documentary filmmakers; namely those who gained prominence with their war films. In addition to filmmakers, the programme includes writers, psychologists, humanitarians, columnists, journalists. The aim is to exchange opinions about the umbrella theme, but also about the specific participant projects.

ZagrebDox Pro: Dox of War is a niche project focusing on deeper research of the key question: How to film a war?

The call for participation is open until January 31: documentary filmmakers with thir projects in all the production stages are eligible to apply. Submit your application via the link.
