Phantom Limb by Jay Rosenblatt, the filmmaker whose retrospective we had a chance to see two years ago at ZagrebDox, poetically focuses on the consequences of his brother’s death in early childhood. The director, also a psychologist, uses this film as a sort of aesthetic self-therapy. Rosenblatt utilises unexpected and all but clichéd audiovisual means. His approach is characterised by the use of different directorial procedures, such as title cards, off narration, archive footage, family videos, accentuated music and interviews. Although it may sound unbelievable, with all the stylistic diversity, the author manages to keep his recognisable, both reserved and emotional, minimalist style.
