The first period is an important experience in every girl's life. Still, it is hardly ever discussed.

The first period is an important experience in every girl's life. Still, it is hardly ever discussed. Women of all ages (from 8 to 84) and cultures talk about their periods in a sincere and witty way. Their moving stories reveal how they see their 'femininity', family dynamics and the society's complex perception of period. As a counterpoint to their stories, clips from educational films about period from the 1950s are included in the film. 'Period Piece' is about the hard time girls have when their bodies "negotiate" with culture. The word period is rarely used in public. In many families it is not mentioned at all. Instead of celebrating this crucial moment, women deodorize it, sanitize it and conceal the evidence of it.
