Day of Youth

Jelena Jovčić

Jelena grew up in a family which thought that they lost when National Liberation Struggle won in 1945. From her childhood she heard her family members referring to liberators, partisans and communists as ‘They’. In 1981 Jelena was placed on the poster which celebrated departed Josip Broz Tito’s birthday. He was the commandant and life long leader of ex Yugoslavia. 25 years later she went to visit Tito’s grave at his birthday, when all of his followers gather to celebrate, so she could see the other side of the story. There she meets Đujka, nice partisan woman and a retired lieutenant colonel. And ‘They’ finally got a face.
